Deborah Greenwood was that one person for South Redford. She heard about the Blessings in a Backpack program because she lived within the Avondale School District where an existing program was running. After seeing the first year’s increased academic, attendance and decreased behavioral issues for the students in Avondale, she knew that South Redford children could benefit from this program. She cared and she asked others to care. With the assistance of the Michigan Advisory Board for Blessings in a Backpack and the North Woodward Community Foundation the steering committee was formed. The next step was asking the community to care.
The community has stepped forward
First in Wayne County
The South Redford School District is the first in Wayne County to embrace this program and third in the state of Michigan to implement the program district wide. The first packing was held on January 12, 2011 with the backpacks going home on January 14, 2011. 394 students had signed up for the program in the four elementary schools and the middle school. With the number of individuals from the community who volunteered for the first packing all of the backpacks were filled and ready for distribution to the schools in one hour. In April, the high school was ready to join the program and that brought the total number of students participating in the program to 435.
On April 3, 2011 the Blessings in a Backpack – South Redford program held its first fundraiser called “Taste the Love in Redford” It was a tasting of local area restaurants signature dishes and was hosted by George Matick Cheverolet. Fifteen area restaurants participated in the event and the community came out in full support. It has been decided to make this an annual event to support Blessings in a Backpack.
