Blessings in a Backpack—West Bloomfield/Keego Harbor
At Roosevelt, a second grade teacher asked the students to finish this pattern orally in class one day: “ I used to think _______ but now I know _____.” She asked them to share with her something she had taught them, that may have changed their thinking. One boy said “I used to think spiders were insects, and now I know they are arachnids!” A girl sitting near him said “I used to think you didn’t need periods or capitals and now I know why they are so important!!” Then one little girl said, “I used to think I would be hungry on the weekends, but now I know that I will NOT be, because a little white bag appears in my locker with food in it, for me to take home on Fridays, and I know I won’t be hungry”!! Then, the teacher said “I cried, so the lesson stopped!”
The heartfelt words of this little girl is why the Blessings in a Backpack program is so vital to our children. Its goal is simple—send every child that qualifies for a Free or Reduced Lunch home every weekend with six meals to eat. Currently, Blessings in a Backpack is sending home meals every weekend to over 100 students at Roosevelt Elementary. Our aim is to spread this worthwhile program across the elementary schools of West Bloomfield. In order to do this, we need your help. Please consider donating $100 or more to Blessings in a Backpack—West Bloomfield/Keego Harbor. That $100 will feed a child for the forty weekends during the school year.
