WYANDOTTE

The Wyandotte Steering Committee realized one way to get the word out to the community about the problem of childhood hunger was to participate in Third Friday events. On the third Friday of each month an event takes place in the streets of downtown Wyandotte. The Steering Committee has been present each month with a table and information.
In August, the Downtown Business Association holds it’s annual Wine Crawl. This year they decided a portion of the proceeds would go to Blessings in a Backpack-Wyandotte. The steering committee assisted with the pouring of wine and selling of glasses. This well attended event raised $10,000 for the program.Over the winter the Steering Committee held a Raffle for a framed autographed Red Wings jersey. The committee sold tickets for many weeks. The Third Friday of February was an ice sculpture display downtown. What a perfect evening to draw the winning ticket.

The committee will continue being part of Third Friday Events

DIAMOND JACK DETROIT RIVER CRUISE

The first annual cruise of the Detroit Rivers was held on August 18, 2011. The event was sold out and the boat sailed on a wonderful summer evening. Guest where entertained by the music from Bass Note Productions. Everyone enjoyed the cheesecake provided by Arta Chiparo from her downtown cheesecake store.

This event was such a success that the committee decided to host another cruise in June of 2012. This event was also a sellout. A autumn dinner cruise is now planned. See details above.

WYANDOTTE BEGINS PACKING FALL OF 2011

The first backpacks went home November 4th, 2011 with the students who qualified at Garfield Elementary. The children were excited to receive a backpack filled with food for the weekend.

ONE PERSON TOUCHING ANOTHER PERSON

The Blessings in a Backpack Steering Committee walked for the second year in the Wyandotte 4th of July Parade to raise the awareness of the concern of childhood hunger in the community. Children from ??? were visiting they Grandparents and attended the parade. Once they heard about the program they decided before they returned home to ??? they would raise some money to give to the program. These two children raised ??? by having a lemonade stand
