Blessings in a Backpack of Michigan
Blessings In a Backpack is a “neighbor-helping-neighbor” program that is designed to help meet the nutritional needs of school-age children.
Each week, volunteers, in cooperation with school officials, distribute backpacks filled with enough non-perishable food for the weekend (six meals) to “hunger insecure” school-age children. These students are participants in the government subsidized Free or Reduced Fee Lunch Program.
The goal of the Blessings in a Backpack program is to keep these children from going hungry on the weekends and remove barriers to academic success.

Announcing a new program for Romeo:
In mid-September we received a request for more information through the contact page of the website from a kindergarten schoolteacher in Romeo. The information was sent and a week later received notice of their continued interest and desire to have a meeting to discuss the next steps to start a program. By the end of the month the meeting was held, and the outcome was to form Blessings in a Backpack-Romeo, a community-based program to assist hunger-insecure school-age children.
There are 1,269 children attending the Romeo Community Schools who can benefit from the Blessings in a Backpack program. This is 24% of the student enrollment. The district serves students from Romeo and portions of Addison Township, Armada Township, Bruce Township, Oakland Township, Ray Township, Shelby Township, and Washington Township
The plan is to start the program at one elementary school. As funds become available, the goal is to grow the Blessings in a Backpack program to be able to serve additional schools within the Romeo Community District until all the schools are participating. To help this program reach its goals, please donate so we can begin sending food home to children who need our help. When we are ready to begin packing, we will also need individuals, groups, or companies to assist with packing and transportation.
Cars & Cigars Smoke Detroit was founded in 2014 by Tom Celani and Dario Bergamo after a visit to the Fuente’s Cigar Family School in the Dominican Republic. Benefiting the Celani Family Foundation and the Cigar Family Charitable Foundation,* this event brings together cars, Fuente cigars, Celani Family Vineyards wines, and a live auction for a festive night of fundraising.
The proceeds from the event directly benefit children of the Cigar Family School in the Dominican Republic and underprivileged families and children through local Detroit charities. We would like to thank the Celani Family Foundation for designating a portion of the proceeds from the 2021 event to Blessings in a Backpack.
Feeding a child is a simple thing that can be taken for granted. But, for the families served by Blessings in a Backpack, a year’s backpacks of food can be life changing. On behalf of the children you have helped, we thank you.
How Blessings in A Backpack-Royal Oak handled the pandemic…
The volunteers for Blessings in a Backpack-Royal Oak went beyond the norm to make sure the children of their community continued to receive their weekend food.
Our Blessings in a Backpack program got an unexpected telephone on Friday, March 13, 2020, that the schools had been closed and the Blessing bins that we’d packed two days before, needed to be picked up. Blessings bags normally would have been delivered to a student’s locker by a school secretary, but the schools had suddenly closed, and we were asked to pick up the bags from 10 schools and figure out how to deliver the bags to the students. Each school quickly prepared us a list, usually handwritten with a students’ name and address.
