Blessings in a Backpack is a program which provides school-age children who are on the Federal Free and Reduced Fee Meal Program with a backpack of food to take home for all weekends during the school year. There are 3,450 children in Southfield School District who are on the Free and Reduced Fee program.

Although these hunger-insecure students are eligible for Free or Reduced Fee lunches during the school week, many of the children do not receive sufficient meals or nutrition on the weekend.  The unfortunate result is that many of the students return to school on Mondays tired and hungry.  In short, it is very difficult to concentrate or care about your studies when you are worried about where your next meal is coming from.

We implemented a Blessings in a Backpack program for one school, Stevenson Elementary in the fall of the 2019-2020 school-year with 50 students. It is the goal to offer this program to all students at Stevenson Elementary and district wide, so all hunger-insecure children can benefit.  Upon returning to the brick and mortar, our goal for the 2021-2022 school year to is provide food for 150 food sensitive students in the Southfield district.

Southfield Big Boy Sip and Savor

In September and October 2019 the new location of Big Boy on Telegraph Road in Southfield held a Sip + Savor Event. Proceeds from each sale of a milk shake was donated to Blessings in a Backpack-Southfield.

A check presentation was held at the Southfield Big Boy in January 2020. Thank you, Big Boy, for partnering with us to feed children each weekend during the school year. We look forward to our on-going relationship.
